Question:
Which Tire Pressure Monitoring system to get?
We are going to Texas, then south Florida over the Christmas holidays and while I love the Maxxis tires, I did lose one on the way to Topsail due to some sharp object.
Not going to be heavily loaded, but want to buy some safety margin.
I believe several members have different systems, wondering if there are any gotchas?
There also seem to be some much cheaper systems that only alert if there is a major leak, which might be OK, but as an engineer, I am always looking for too much information rather than too little. After the first trip, I probably won't watch it much.
What do you all think?
I know we have some real believers out there, but do we have any actual "saves"

I have not had an actual save but I have the Doran system and I think it is great, I love it. It looks at several different aspects of the tires. Look it up on the net and check it out.

Thanks Leon,
They all seem to have some differences. Camping World has the Hopkind/nVision on sale for 299 with six sensors, four sensor systems from other suppliers for as low as 233.
TST seems to have a smaller monitor, and Doran seems to be higher priced with more features. Pressure Pro seems to be in the middle. Probably all will work OK.

I have the TST system. It works fine. You need to be sure you get the external antenna with the kit. I had intermittent dropouts when using the stubby on the unit, so I mounted the external up under my chassis, and all is great now. Here is a photo of the mount I made for my backup cam and TST Monitor. By the way, TST also monitors temperature, and warns you if your preset limit is reached.

I also like the TST as the unit will go without a charge for several days. No wires to the cig lighter to worry with. Wish my backkup cam monitor had a battery too.

TST here. Got it at a great price, (group buy on outbackers) this system came with the most stuff. Hard wire, cigarette wire, two antenna's and a smaller straight forward monitor. Works great and yes it save us.

Thanks, I like the idea of battery power. Also, it seems to have a smaller display, less clutter on the dash.

All,
Just went to the TST site to order four sensor system for $229 and to check on shipping, noticed they are in Cumming, GA about 15 miles up the road from me.
I will just drive up there to see the system and buy direct!
Maybe a cash discount?

I have the TST, it saved us on our way to the fall rally. It has worked fine up to this point. I have had no problem picking up signal using the small antenna on the side of unit. I have the external antenna that I keep in TV for backup if needed.

Dave,

See if he will give you a discount if you purchase four more sensors as well. I don't need another monitor, just the sensors and he wasn't in a discount mood when I mentioned what I wanted BUT if you are buying yours at the same time, maybe he will discount four additional sensors. Give me a call and I'll bring cash to you.

I noticed that if I set the unit on the dash, or higher,(like up on the mirror) it works fine with the stubby, but if I put it down under the radio, it will drop a wheel every now and then. So, I just placed the external one up under the bed between the frame rails, and it never drops one now.

If u mention outbackers they may give u a discount, I started a group buy at the other site and it went ok. Overall I think everyone was pleased with the tst. One word of advice, make sure u check them periodically and have metal valve stems. On our 9800 mile trip the alarms started sounding and found three of them to be loose. When they become loose they lose pressure. I did alot of research and all three system were pretty good. It was just that tst was more willing to give us a break than the others. If u have any questions please post.

I rec'd the system, will install this weekend, looks good, like the small screen.
I thought system with 4 systems for 229 was an ok price, I will call and see if i can get 4 more sensors at a discount.
I mentioned Outbackers, but Darlene(?) said they were already on sale at the 229 price. Free shipping too.
Nick, what should the 4 sensors cost?

I think the sensors regularly go for about $50 each. Maybe they can give you a good discount.

I will call them Monday,
BTW, where do you set your limits?
Any info will save ma a lot of fiddling around as I don't know what to expect with norlam pressure/temp increases.
Next week in Texas will be cold, but any info would be helpful.
I didn't install metal stems, but fashioned wire clips to hold the stems. A trick we used on race cars in the early days. They wrap around the stem, then clip into the holes in the wheel.

Atlanta to Dallas this wekend. TST is great, set to 50 psi, press ranged from 48 to 57. Temps were cold, 3 degrees above ambient. One sensor reads 3 degrees less than the other three, but not an issue.
Used the stub antenna, no problems.

I have the pressure pro. Checked out some others but listened to others rave about pressure pro. So I bought it. Thought it was expensive. Hope it's worth it.

Price was one reason for the TST, also they are located in Cumming, GA but shipping was free so I saved a 30 min drive!
I have prevented at least two blowouts, but of course, still had to deal with the punctures.
The worst was in a construction zone with concrete barriers for miles, no turnoffs or exits. Pressure dropping, was not able to save the tire, but I was able to finally exit safely. Priceless.
