Since the Summer Rally died and we already had vacation planned, we decided to go to our favorite near campground...Jekyll Island. Unfortunately, the temps were in the upper 90's and the smoke from all of the forest fires was blowing our way! However, we decided to try and make the best of it. We cooked in our DO's and made some sausage-zucchini rice casserole and Jalapeno Cheese bread.

It was good!

Our camping buddy was enjoying herself!

Wednesday night brought a nasty storm with high winds and lightning. Trees and tree limbs down all over the island and no power from 3:00 AM until about 1030 AM. As some of y'all know, my DW doesn't breath well in hot humid conditions. The heat, lack of power and smoke was not a good combination. The weather was supposed to repeat itself for the next couple of days so we packed up and came home early. When we got home yesterday, we had a surprise waiting for us.

Trees are not supposed to be leaning on other trees!

I think the tree was diseased because it looks like the base was rotted. I'm guessing at the size, but I'd say it is 25 to 30 inches in diameter at the base. I'm sure glad that it did not fall on the house!

Hey Lamar, the bugs were not bad. There were skeeters at times, but no sand gnats, yellow flies or horse flies. In that respect, it was nice.
That portion of our house is where my Mom lives. We added that to the house about 10 years ago. She was home alone since we were camping. That's one of the reasons that I don't talk on facebook or here about where we are going and when. It's too easy for the bad guys to zero in on something like that. However, my Mom did have a 38 special by her side! Anyway, the tree incident makes me wonder about the other 40 trees around my house!

THAT looks like a close call! We have lots of lovely GA pines along with other tall trees around our house and every time a storm comes up, I'm always cringing. They sure have been doing a lot of popping and cracking lately with all this dry heat  My parents live in the NC mtns ie, Smokies and they had a big tree fall right in front of their house Thursday nite also and didn't have power for 24 hrs! Scary :(

Now that is some good looking food. Bet is was really good. Joe, Margaret and I are going to make it over there one day to camp. We spent 4 years there while I was in the Navy stationed at NAS Glynco. Loved it while we were there. Glad to hear all was ok at the home front.

Joe, the tree wasn't diseased...we had the same thing happen to us with a tree like that last May. Unfortunately we were not as lucky since our tree hit two cars and the house on the way down, and it totaled one car. What happened is this... you see that other tree it was nestled up beside? When the wind blows they rub against one another and eventually if you don't get an arborist to run a wire in it, one or both trees rot at the base from the damage of rubbing together. I'm glad you didn't come home to find it through your roof!

Don, I have 2 more trees that are real close like that. I probably need someone to check them out. I love my wooded lot because it is so cool in the summer, but it works me to death and cost me money. I've had to take down 8 of them in the last 10 years. I have 40 some odd tees left!
